His Excellency Turki Alalshih said in an interview today that Terence Crawford will fight “after May. He has a “minor injury” but will be ready to fight in the first half of 2025.
Turki did not say who Crawford’s (41-0, 31 KO) potential opponent would be, but said he would like to talk to Canelo Alvarez one-on-one “with no one in the middle.”
He may be trying to negotiate a fight with Crawford, who would have to move up two weight classes to 168 to challenge Canelo for their unified super middleweight titles.
Crawford expressed no desire to earn the title against Canelo by facing either contender at 168. After his troubles against Israil Madrimov at 154 on August 3rd, it’s perfectly understandable why he would be hesitant to do so.
“I don’t know anyone from Canelo’s team and I have no connection, but if he hears me, I’m ready to talk about what I want to talk about, me and him, directly with no one in the middle.” said His Excellency Turki Alalshikh Ariel Hevvani’s channel about wanting a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
“He has a little health issue, but he prefers to fight with us after May,” Turki said of Terence Crawford’s injury.
If Turki can’t work out a deal for Canelo to fight Crawford, that will leave the Nebraska native with some tough options in the 154lb division. That weight class teams up with dangerous sharks that would feed on the aging Crawford, who came close to losing to Madrimov on August 3rd.
Canelo is already sitting on a fortune estimated at a quarter of a billion. He won’t lose any sleep over turning down a fight against Crawford, who will use Mayweather’s plan against him. Canelo doesn’t want to deal with a mover and clincher at this late stage in his career, especially in a winless fight where he won’t get credit if he wins.
If Canelo struggles to win, it makes Crawford look great and tarnishes the Mexican star’s legacy. Canelo’s marketability is declining while Crawford’s is growing. Unless Turki wants to offer Alvarez $180 million, I don’t see the Terence fight happening. You have to understand that whatever Canelo is asking for, Crawford is going to want similar dough, and that wouldn’t bring in many PPV buys.
Bud is a complete unknown to casual fans. He has NEVER been popular throughout his career because he has no style of entertainment and never has. Fans who saw Crawford fight Errol Spence assumed that he always fights like that, but that’s not the case. He only looked good in that fight because Spence was a shell of his former self due to injuries from his two crashes, eye problems, inactivity and weight gain.
