At least two people were killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Monday, Lebanese authorities said, as a truce that ended more than a year of fighting between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah appeared increasingly fragile.
The cease-fire, which took effect early on November 27, stipulates that Israel will not conduct offensive military operations against civilian, military or other state targets in Lebanon, while Lebanon will not allow any armed groups, including Hezbollah, to conduct operations against Lebanon. One person was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 kilometers from the border with Israel, Lebanon’s health ministry said.
Lebanon’s national security services said an Israeli drone strike killed a member of its forces while on duty in Nabatieh, 12 km from the border. State security called it a “gross violation” of the ceasefire.
The Lebanese army said an Israeli drone hit an army bulldozer in northeastern Lebanon near the border with Syria, injuring one soldier.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters about the incidents in Marjayoun and Nabatia. It issued a statement saying it had attacked military vehicles operating near Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley and military vehicles near the border with Syria.
The Israeli military acknowledged that one of its strikes wounded a Lebanese soldier and said the incident was under investigation.
At least 54 Israeli ceasefire violations so far: Lebanon
Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally and Beirut’s main negotiator in the truce talks, said Lebanon had recorded at least 54 violations by Israel so far.
In a statement released by his office, Beri urged the committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire to “urgently” begin work and “impose” on Israel to stop its violations and withdraw troops from Lebanese soil.
The ceasefire agreement stipulates that a monitoring mechanism hosted by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and led by the US will “monitor, verify and help ensure the implementation of the ceasefire”.
“The aggressive actions carried out by the Israeli occupation forces are a clear violation of the terms of the ceasefire agreement,” Beri said.
