Former Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is facing a £1.8 million ($2.3 million) bill after losing his legal battle with the tax authorities.
Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the magical film franchise, was ordered to pay the money in 2019 after the UK tax agency HM Revenue and Customs investigated his tax return seven years earlier.

The agency said Grint had misclassified £4.5m of film residuals – money from DVD sales, TV syndication, streaming rights and other sources – as fixed assets rather than income, which is subject to a much higher rate of tax.
Grint’s lawyers appealed, but after years of arguments, a tribunal judge ruled against the actor this week. Judge Harriet Morgan said the money “derived essentially all of its value from Mr Grint’s activities” and “is being taxed as income”.
Grint, 36, starred in all eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011 as the boy wizard’s best friend and is estimated to have earned around £24m from the role.
He previously lost a separate court battle for a £1m tax refund in 2019.
