Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has apologized to the Spanish people after the escalating corruption scandal was lowered by a colleague of a senior Socialist Party.
Sanchez, who has been running Spain since 2018, said there was no such thing as “zero corruption” and he tried to distance himself from the Dack, excluding early elections.
The opposition conservative leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said sánchez is time to resign: “Survival is no longer a chance.”
The humiliated Sánchez admitted that he had made a mistake in trusting Santos Cerdan, secretary of his Socialist Party, and talked about his deep disappointment.
Cerdán was asked to testify in court after the referee suggested that he may have acted with former party officials in a wrong awarding public agreements in exchange for rebounds.
He said on Thursday that on June 25, he resigned to defend the Supreme Court, claiming that he “never committed a crime, and I have not been an accomplice.”
Despite his seven years of power, Sánchez runs a shaky, minority coalition that was secured after the conservative popular party won 2023 elections but did not form a government.
Despite speculation about his future, he called the press conference, trying to leave the creeping scandal.
In a statement followed by questions in the media, he said he was absolutely unaware of the corruption case and instead committed him to restructure the leadership of his Socialist Psoe Party.
“It’s not about me, and it’s not about the Socialist Party,” he said.
His government would continue its “political project”, insisting that no new elections will take place by 2027.
However, sánchez may face pressure from her coalition after Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz said from the left wing coalition partner Sumara that she also wants explanations.
The opposition’s popular party has been increased by a weekend rally in the center of Madrid, which attracted tens of thousands of supporters, calling on Sánchez to go into the slogan “Mafia or Democracy”.
Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijo turned to other coalition parties to leave the prime minister. There was no firewall, he told reporters on Thursday: “Corruption is already a trait of this government and it must end.”
Slightly more than an hour earlier, Sánchez had expressed its first time in response to media questions since the national power break that hit Spain in April.
Speaking from the Socialist Party (PSOE) National Headquarters in Madrid, the prime minister said he was convinced of Santosa Cerdán’s integrity by Thursday morning and wanted to apologize to Spanish citizens.
“There is no such thing as zero corruption, but when it happens, there must be zero tolerance,” said Psoe Secretary General Sánchez. “We didn’t have to trust him.”
Sanchez accuses the opposition to lead a smear campaign. Like many others, he said he had his own mistakes and asked the Spanish people for forgiveness.
He continued to accuse the Conservatives of robbing his government on many issues and followed his message with a message in the social media, promising to continue working on what he had always been: “Pure politics and democratic restoration”.
Sanchez has faced repeated political crises and threatened to stand in April 2024.
He needed five days to decide on his future when the court decided to reveal a preliminary proceedings against his wife for claims about her business transactions.
Then he also called the television press conference, and at the time of the high drama announced that he had decided to stay in this work.
However, Cerdán’s resignation is a moment of political threat to the Prime Minister.
Even if he is not personally involved in the claims of corruption, one of his closest political allies is with two other officials.
The Supreme Court judge, Leopoldo Pente, acted after a long report by the Spanish Civil Guard Central Operational Unit that Cerdán, the organizer of the Socialist Party, had full knowledge of payments made in a possible rebound scandal.
The referee said the report revealed that evidence shows that Cerdán had a secret agreement with former Sánchez Age Transport Minister José Louis Luisa in ábbalos and former minister’s Coldo García.
Ábbalos lost his job repeated in 2021 and was then forced to depart from the Socialist Party in 2024. He is still an independent Member of Parliament.
The police report is based on a number of records made by Koldo García in four years, which estimates that payments were worth € 620,000 (£ 530,000).
Some records on Thursday appeared in the Spanish media, claiming that Cerdán and Koldo García have discussed payments for significant amounts of money.
Koldo García and José Luis ábbalos are also invited to testify. The former minister denies that he has done anything wrong.
